MARCH 8, 2026 IN CAMEROON: CELEBRATIONS TESTED BY SOCIAL REALITIES
The Ministry for the Promotion of Women and the Family organizes conferences, debates and sports walks across the country.
As 41ᵉ International Women's Rights Day approaches, initiatives are multiplying.
But beyond the festivities, many women are calling for concrete action. They want to go beyond speeches and symbols.
They denounce the daily reality of women's professional and social lives.
Gender-based violence causes concern
March 8, 2026 comes at a time when violence is on the rise and the number of feminicides is high.
According to local media and human rights organizations, nearly 70 feminicides took place in Cameroon in 2024.
Further cases were reported in 2025 and 2026. These crimes occur mainly in contexts of domestic or gender-based violence.
Cases of rape and torture inflicted on young girls also add to this disturbing reality.
Faced with this situation, many are calling on the authorities to take firm action to protect women.
A celebration that must rediscover its meaning
Officially instituted by the United Nations in 1977, International Women's Rights Day has its origins in workers' struggles.
Its aim was to guarantee better working conditions and equal rights for all.
Today, women are reminding us that the day is not just about wearing loincloths or celebrating.
They demand a return to the true meaning of celebration: effectively defending women's rights.
Under the theme «Rights, justice, action for all women and girls», the 2026 edition focuses on access to justice and real equality.
It must also encourage economic empowerment and protect women against all forms of violence.
